Indore has the distinction of being the state’s commercial capital. Indore is also known as mini-Mumbai since Indore is to Madhya Pradesh what Mumbai is to India. Indore has the largest economy in central India and is the business and trading capital of the state.

Despite Indore’s numerous tourist attractions, its importance continues to be commerce and the city is driven by business.

Indore along with the nearby towns such as Dewas and Pithampur is the economic engine of the state. Pithampur is known as the Detroit of India given its automotive cluster. The city and surrounding areas are further poised to grow in importance given that they are part of the proposed Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor.

Indore’s development over the last few decades has created a need for further investment in urban infrastructure. The Smart City initiative will assist in ensuring a better quality of life for the citizens and at the same time be centred on the city’s and region’s economic potential, focus on diversifying the type of businesses, enhance livelihoods with minimal impact on the environment and also promote the city’s rich cultural and historical heritage. The objective is to further enhance Indore’s importance as an economic engine of West-Central India.
